Enigma: Paintings by Janine Schmitt

Hanover Theatre

Franklin Square Society Lounge Gallery
Worcester, Massachusetts

Image: Enigma, oil on canvas, 48×54″.

On Monday, March 3, from 6:00 to 8:00PM, please join us to celebrate the opening of Enigma, an exhibition of abstract expressionist paintings by Janine Schmitt at the Hanover Theatre’s Franklin Square Society Lounge, 2 Southbridge Street. This reception is open and free to the public.

Schmitt describes her work as a tension between expressionism and the “mind’s desire for structure and order.” Beginning with a format of grids and pre-cut shapes, she then engages in an approach she describes as “childlike innocence,” applying and reapplying paint, adding and subtracting layers, using whatever tools are at hand. The result are large-scale, deeply textured and richly colored canvases that create a sense of discovery and exhilaration.

After the opening, viewing of this exhibit is by appointment, and is also free and open to the public. Parking for the opening and viewing appointments is available in the City’s Federal Square lot, across Main Street from the Hanover Theatre.
